Why Anxiety Isn't Just Overthinking

Why Anxiety Isn’t Just “Overthinking”

September 1, 2026

“I just need to stop overthinking.”

If you’ve said that to yourself, you’re not alone. Maybe someone else has said it to you, too: a partner, a parent, a well-meaning friend. And maybe, deep down, you’ve started to believe them. That if you could just relax a little more, focus a little better, worry a little less, this would all go away.

Here’s what I want you to hear instead, from years of sitting across from people who carry this exact weight: anxiety is not a thinking problem. It’s not a personality flaw, and it’s not something you can logic your way out of.

I’ve watched hundreds of capable, thoughtful, hardworking people believe they were somehow broken because their anxiety didn’t respond to reason. It’s not that they didn’t try hard enough. It’s that anxiety was never a logic problem to begin with.

Why This Happens So Often

Anxiety shows up because it’s built into how we’re wired to survive. Your nervous system is designed to scan for danger and prepare your body to respond. The problem is that system can’t always tell the difference between a genuine threat and an overflowing inbox, a hard conversation you’re dreading, or an old pattern from childhood that taught you the world wasn’t safe to relax in.

Once that alarm gets triggered often enough by stress, by trauma, or simply by growing up in a home where calm wasn’t the norm, your nervous system starts firing more easily, and more often. That’s not a character flaw. That’s a nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do.

What’s Actually Happening in Your Body

Here’s the part most people never get told: when you’re in the middle of an anxious spiral, your body got there first. Heart rate climbs. Breathing turns shallow. Muscles brace. The part of your brain responsible for calm, rational thinking quiets down, while the part responsible for detecting threat gets louder.

So when someone tells you to “just think it through,” they’re asking your brain to do something it’s temporarily less equipped to do in that moment. The overthinking isn’t the root cause.  It’s often your mind’s attempt to grab back a sense of control over a body that already feels unsafe. If you’ve been calling yourself an overthinker for years, it might be worth asking: is this really about your thoughts, or is your body sounding an alarm your mind is just trying to keep up with?

How Therapy Helps

Real change doesn’t come from being told to think differently. It comes from helping your whole system, body and mind together,  learn that it’s safe to power down from high alert.

In session, I draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you understand and gently reshape anxious thought patterns, alongside mindfulness-based and somatic techniques that regulate the nervous system itself, not just the thoughts running through it. Where it’s helpful, we’ll also explore where these patterns began, so healing goes deeper than symptom relief.

You can expect a space that’s warm, unhurried, and entirely your own.  No judgment for how “irrational” your worries might feel, and no pressure to have it all figured out before you walk in.

There Is a Way Through This

If anxiety has convinced you that you’re just an overthinker, hear this clearly: you are not too much, and you are not broken. What you’re experiencing makes sense, and it can change. I’ve watched it happen again and again, even for people who were certain it never would for them.
